2012 - A Year With Faith

This past year has been a doozy. I have heard the same sentiment from many and witnessed the same from many. A year of challenges, changes, losses, pains. Along with those pains came growth, but at a cost. Perhaps 2012 will be known as the year of growing pains.

My arms are open and ready to embrace 2013. They are open but not wide. A guarded embrace will take place as the clock strikes twelve.

As I grew more accustomed to the blogging world over the last few years or so, I embraced the tradition of choosing a word of the year versus making New Year's resolutions. Resolutions never seemed to make it past the idea stage so I had no problem giving up the useless tradition to forge ahead with another.

2011 - Focus
       I chose the word focus because it was something I needed to work on, something I was greatly lacking. I chose the word and failed it miserably. I had no plan, no idea how to work with a "word of the year" and ironically, no focus! By the end of 2011 I had to look back at the previous year's blog post to see what my word for the year actually was. I had forgotten. Obviously a complete lack of focus. I found the matter to be quite amusing with no sweat off my back.

2012 - Faith
       There was a huge difference with my word for 2012. Difference number one. The word chose me. I did not choose a word, rather I allowed words to play around in my mind until one took hold. I asked the universe to provide my word and it chose Faith. I had been warned that when a word chooses you (versus you choosing a word), you better hang on. The word means business! Can I just say that I believe that was the understatement of the year?
       This past year was one of the hardest of my life. Trust me. I have had some hard, ugly, difficult times. This past year saw my marriage challenged, my world shaken, loved ones lost, and a health issue that had me scared for my life. I am still working on how to shake fear as it is the state I have lived in my entire life, though most say they wouldn't know it (my mask hides me well). I have cried more tears in this past year than I thought possible to produce in a lifetime.
       Faith started out as something I thought one had, only to discover it is something one does, practices, gains. Faith no longer feels like a noun. I believe it to be more of a verb. People say "Have faith". I always thought my grandmother 'had faith'. Faith is something you work to understand, work to gain and then work to keep. Perhaps once you have done all the work you can 'have' it, but there are still times it is threatened and you must work to keep it. It is shaken and you must stabilize. It is questioned and you must defend.
       I walked into my year feeling strong and cocky. "Hmm... cute little word. Pretty sure I know what it means. Let's question it. Digest it. Play with it."
       Faith said, "Oh no you don't! I chose you! This is my year. I get the lead. I take control. You are simply along for the ride."
       Or so it felt.

       I was talking to my husband about a word for this year. He said, "Don't do it." He was as scared for me as I was. He actually said he thought choosing a word to focus on was similar to worshiping a false God. Interesting. Also not real settling. I thought about what he said and thought it sounded a bit like hooey, but at the same time, I was scared. Scared of what the new year would bring, scared to ask for a word, but it had already happened and I knew it. A word had settled in a few weeks prior. I felt it nudging and whispering and trying to attach itself to me. It felt like a good word, a good fit, yet I could not shake the fear it might possibly carry with it a hidden agenda of hard times and painful lessons.
       The word whispered "trust me, you need me" and that's when it hit me.

       When a word chooses you for a year, it is not the word that brings challenges. Life brings challenges. The word allows for transformation. It allows for growth to occur and wisdom to be gained. When walking with a word, we have something to work with, something to lean on, something to guide us. It shows we are open and willing to learn and transform. It is a way for the Universe to guide us.
       Faith carried me through this past year. At first I questioned it. When I started to think I knew what it was, it made sure to let me know I had a lot to learn. It challenged me and left me until I realized that I was the one who left. When I questioned it, it gave me something to focus on, to learn from. It allowed me to look at things differently. It held my hand through the difficulty and celebrated the good.
       It has been an extremely hard year. I am thankful I had faith by my side. I plan on continuing to grow with/in faith as I know I have a long way to go. Faith is not a word for a year, it is a word for life.

2013 -
       This year, my year is my year. I claim it for myself. The word that has nudged me will be at my side. I am keeping it to myself (at least for now), holding it gently and close to my heart. Once again, it picked me. In all honesty, having a word choose me when I wasn't sure whether I wanted a word this year, makes me a bit leery. It is a good word. One of the best. I choose to step into the new year with positive intention and  gratitude. May the new year choose to greet me with the same. May it choose the same for you.

A few months ago I was blessed with a weekend get-a-way with a few other ladies. One is a forever friend, the other I had never met. I almost chickened out. I ended up staying one night instead of two. It was just right. We stayed up late talking deep and long, sharing stories in front of a wood burning stove. The room pictured below is the one I stayed in at the bed and breakfast. So much introspect and healing and dealing of past has gone on for me this year. It was interesting to me that the room I received was representative of the room I had as a small child. It was rather symbolic of the work I've been doing to make peace with my past.

NaNoWriMo 2012 - Day 15

NaNoWriMo Day 15 -

     Wow! I made it to the halfway point! I am halfway through this crazy writing challenge! This is also the first day I am actually slightly ahead of the curve punching in with 25,350 words! Not to toot my own horn, but... ah what the heck! Toot Toot!
     Actually, I can't take all the credit. I have a strong support group and I have believing mirrors.
     This past week has been really hard. My body is retaliating and my mood hit the dumper but I persevered and here I am. Halfway.

     Today I visited my son's school. They have this great program called "Superstars". Every month there is a superstar theme. This month's theme was "making good decisions". My son was chosen by one of the teachers to receive recognition for his excellent decision making. The school holds a mini monthly awards show for the chosen superstars. The room fills with superstars and their parents (parents bring lunch for their child from their favorite restaurant) and while everyone eats, they call the student's names one at a time, have them stand at the front of the room while they read who chose them as a superstar and why. The student then receives an award and a small gift. They have their picture taken with their award. The pictures are then displayed for the rest of the month on a wall next to the office for all to see.
     It is such a cool program. It not only promotes student success, but it recognizes and rewards those students in a positive way. I was so proud of my son and all of this months superstars.
After returning home I sat back down to work on my novel. I couldn't help but correlate between the parents at school and those of you who have been cheering me on. It has been a hard few weeks and I still have a few more to go, but right now I just feel so proud and I want to thank all of you who are cheering me on. You make me feel like a superstar and I am grateful for that. With my word count as my reward, I...
Thank You!

"Show up. Get to work even when you don't feel like writingespecially when you don't feel like writing."  ~Daniel H. Pink

Ever feel stuck? Ask yourself "& then..."
Representative of the spoonfuls of love, support and encouragement I have been receiving for which I am grateful.

NaNoWriMo 2012 - Day 5

NaNoWriMo Day 5 - What a fabulous and wonderful weekend! I was invited to spend an evening at a bed and breakfast in the western hills of Wisconsin with a couple of other ladies. I enjoyed beautiful scenery, lack of cell service (which meant no interruptions), wonderful conversation, sisterly love and great food. It was relaxing and recharging beyond belief. Upon arrival home I grabbed the family and headed off to visit a family friend who invited us over for dinner and a movie. It was a second late night of friends and fun. Yesterday was all about food and football. I managed to eek in writing all weekend but still fell behind my daily goal. This morning I logged onto my regional NaNoWriMo group on FB and found a gentleman looking for a word war! We set the clock for one hour and we were off! I won the word war and nearly caught up with my word count. I am feeling so happy today!
My past experiences with NaNoWriMo left me feeling down in the dumps as I quit on myself. This year, all the stars have aligned. I'm in a good place of personal growth for the challenge, my believing mirrors and cheerleaders are out in full swing, serendipity and inspiration are blowing under my wings and I am soaring!
Today I chose a giggle quote.  :)

"I love being a writer. What I can't stand is the paperwork."  ~ Peter De Vries

Thank you to all who are cheering me on and those joining me on this writing journey. I grabbed this image off an old sign hanging on a fence at the B&B this weekend. I couldn't help but think of  all of you. You are my net of support there to catch me if I fall. Thank you!

Accountable

I have added a button to the top of the right hand column of my blog. Do you see it? It's a word counter. A NaNoWriMo word counter.

NaNoWriMo - (from their website) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing on November 1. The goal is to write a 50,000-word (approximately 175-page) novel by 11:59:59 PM on November 30.

I have attempted this competition for three years now, always throwing in the towel fairly early. I felt guilty for taking the time, my inner critic talked me out of it, it was too hard. A few of the reasons for my past failures. This year, I am determined to win! I am telling family. I am telling friends. Now I am telling you. The more people that know, the more real it will be, the more I will feel held accountable.

This is Lennon. He loves our printer. He waits patiently for pages to print and is beyond thrilled when they arrive. I am going to tape this picture above my printer so he can hold me accountable (as much as a cat can).

A friend sent me this picture. She cannot be here to breathe down my neck. She wants this for me. Bad. She knows how important it is to me. I will hang this picture by my computer. It is to remind me she's watching, holding me accountable.

If you pop in throughout the month of November, keep an eye on the word counter. See how I'm progressing. Feel free to cheer me on! If I slip, give me a little poke, but please be gentle!

Have you struggled with a self-challenge in the past?
What tricks and/or tools did you use to overcome?

List it Tuesday 10/9/12

Today I am tagging along with a prompt from Artsyville. What fun! A "list it Tuesday"! Today's list topic is  "I am a sucker for..."

Here is my list!

Holy Head Cold Hannah!

A tiny bit of a bug
has taken up residency in my skull
wreaking havoc on my thoughts
and creating a misfit of actions.

I spent the entire day (yesterday) wrapped in blankets
thinking it was Monday,
missing appointments,
letting my helpless laundry go stagnant in the washer.

I ate soup, took naps, vegged on a movie
and read books when my brain allowed the words to appear normal.
I whined, I complained.
I drank kombucha, ate garlic and flushed my system
with as much fluid as my bladder could handle (and then some).

If I don't attack the cold, the cold attacks me
and I will end up with bronchitis (again) or worse,
pneumonia (which I have had three times).

Woke this morning to progress.
That little bug is packing his bags.
Eviction process is in full swing.

I'm sparing you any pictures.
;0)

My apologies for the lack of substance in this post. Guess I just missed it here and wanted to say, "Hello Friends! I miss you!"

Blessings

It may appear that we are alone on our journey through life,
but one need only to look to the left or the right
to see that we are not alone. We are walking side by side.

With deep gratitude I thank each one of you for being by my side.

~~~~~~
A wish, a kiss, a blessing
sent out onto the air
praying it reaches your doorstep
and finds you waiting there.
May your heart open wide and fill with love.
May your soul feel light and free.
May you find magic in the air this holiday season
and love filled gifts under your tree.
I thank you and love you for being here.
Your friendships and support touch my heart.
May God bless you this holiday season.
May the New Year bless you from finish to start.
Life
Valuable
Fleeting
I had an eye opening first few hours of my day today.
It really has me thinking about life.
The big picture.
The little things.
What matters.
Love
I woke all my children and one by one helped them get ready for school,
hugged them goodbye, told them I loved them and wished them a happy day.
Joy
I stood at the patio door and watched the world through a rain streaked window.
The cold, dreary morning was not bringing me down, rather, I enjoyed watching the raindrops race to the bottom and felt happy to have a warm, safe house from which to watch the cold, dank weather.
Sorrow
I sat at my computer to check on my fellow bloggers.
Tears swelled and ran down my face just as the rain runs down my window.
I found out one of my fellow bloggers was just diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer.
Such a talented, vibrant, wonderful woman.
She needs prayers. I am sending them in mass.
Gratitude
It was so inspiring and touching and important that I plan on using it as a morning meditation.
It is touching, inspiring and beautiful.
Visit the link. You will be moved.
Two little hours were filled with so very much.
My View
 Thank You! Thank You!
...for your kind thoughts, prayers, and well wishes.
This has been my view since coming home on Friday (for the most part).
Every day the pain is less severe.
Every day I am becoming more active.
I am trying to take it easy and slow.
No backsliding here.
No way!
I'm going to have a new lease on life!
Look out world! Here I come!...
... in a few more weeks.
tee hee!
(The surgeries went very well and my peace of mind going in was literally that. Peaceful. I thank all of you for your help with that. You surrounded me with prayers, healing energy and love. It carried me through with peace in my heart.)
Am I A Loser???
I need your help!
 I fear I may be a loser!
Twice Over!!!
Indulge me, if you will, in two debates.
Debate #1
The age old "over or under" debate.
Toilet paper.
Over (front)?
Or under (back)?
Debate #2
Magazines
Okay to read from back to front?
Or ONLY acceptable front to back?
If you reply, you MUST answer honestly!
No sparing my feelings.
I'm a big girl.
I wear big girl panties.
I can take it.
sniff ~ sniff ~
No really.
I need to know.
Do I win the debate?
Or am I a loser?
~  ~  ~  ~  ~
In my circle of friends, I have failed miserably.
Here's my take.
T.P. should be put on the roll so the tail drapes down the BACK!!!
I guess that would be "under"
I don't want the tail flapping over the top at me.
Mocking me.
Taunting me.
"Here I am!!! Hanging over!!! Look at me looking sloppy!!!"
I want it neatly placed under (to the back)
where it will lie silently against the wall
neatly in line with the vertical lines of the cabinets and walls.
Anal? A bit. Correct? I believe so.
My husband and (as I have recently found out)
a couple of close friends find my way completely unacceptable.
They are of the "over" crowd.
Swearing it only makes sense that the extra paper tail be resting atop the roll.
Whaaaaat????
Can this be???
~  ~  ~  ~  ~
As for the magazines.
I get them. I love them. I devour them.
I read them back to front.
Not religiously, but 90% of the time.
Now I'm not a total freak.
Books, letters, mail, everything aside from magazines
gets read the proper way from top to bottom, left to right.
There's just something about magazines.
I pick them up and they demand I start from the back!
Magazines scream,
"scan me"
"leaf through"
"dabble"
"play with me"
I read them bits and chunks.
Willy nilly.
Starting in the back, flapping toward the front.
Whatever grabs me I read.
Next time it is picked up, I do the same.
Like a lottery of entertainment.
Then....
my world was shattered.
A friend told me that reading a magazine from back to front
was a freaky thing to do.
"NO ONE reads from back to front"
She declared.
"I beg to differ! I do! And I'm someone!"
"Well that's just plain strange."
"What about all the people leafing through at the doc office? Do you think they pick them up and read front to back? Or do they pick something willy nilly? Perhaps EVEN starting at the back?"
"No One starts at the back. It's just wrong."
She even pulled in another friend. We were at a party when this ugly debate started. The friend? Agreed with her. Then again, it was HER friend. They actually started laughing at me and saying how ridiculous it was. They were asking around and guess what???? I was the ONLY one to read back to front! Of course I have no clue if everyone was being honest with me. After all, it was my friend throwing the party. Perhaps they all agreed with her as not to risk being kicked to the curb on the night of the party!?!?
Once again, my circle of friends claimed
I was the loser.
~  ~  ~  ~  ~
Sooo...
dear bloggy friends....
I reach out to you.
Two debates
in need of two answers.
#1
t.p.
over (front) or under (back)
#2
magazines
acceptable to read from back to front?
yes or no
I will be anxiously lurching around patiently waiting for the results to see if I have won the debate (yes!!! winner!!!)
or
if, in fact, I am a loser.
;)
Thanks for playing along!
Have a happy, safe, brilliant weekend!
Living With An Open Mind
  This past week has been crazy busy.
This morning was calm and wonderful!
I spent the early hours enjoying a special phone conversation
with an amazing blog friend
who lives an ocean away.
After breakfast with the kids
I drove to a lovely little coffee shop
and spent hours chatting with a friend
whom I have not seen in some time.
  What does my morning have to do with the post title
'living with an open mind'?
Let me re-tell my story.
My morning phone call was a gift of a long distance tarot reading.
My coffee was consumed at a Christian coffee house
with an athiest friend
conversing about
politics
parenting
and life in general.
It was an absolutely lovely morning
spent with good friends,
good food, and lovely surroundings.
I would not have been able to experience all that goodness
if not for living with an open mind.
Is your mind open to all the wonderment
and possibilities in the world?
If not, what are you waiting for?
Open up Baby!
The world is waiting!
What A Weekend!!!!
I had a whirlwind weekend
full of
busyness
fun
inspiration
laughter
enjoyment
exhaustion
fulfillment
joy.
There were
epiphanies
quiet moments
great conversation
and love.
I was trying to capture a moment to share
 but it seemed an impossible task.
 The weekend sits in me as a
discombobulated flurry of good feelings
and I would rather like to keep it that way.
Rather than explain,
I will share a glimpse.
Pardon the picture quality.
My P&S (or should I say POS) camera
is very temperamental lately. Grrrr!
This lovely old building...
 housed this lovely art show...
with lovely live music!...
A visit to my friend's flip home almost ready for market.
Yay Crimestoppers!!! Thank you for hosting an electronics recycle!!!!!
 Oh yeah!!! Junk shopping.
How cool is this bike?!!!!
Aaaaaahhhh books!!!!
...and fireworks!!!
The Overachiever
I purchase my eggs from local farmers.
Yesterday I made scrambled eggs for the kids.
This is what I pulled from the carton.
The comedian in me started laughing and thought,
"Wow! Looks like we have an overachiever in the coop!"
The philosopher in me thought,
"Nature at its best is perfectly imperfect. We should accept ourselves the same."
Today I say to you, "Go live your life and live it loud. Don't try to be perfect,
just be. And if you push real hard, you just might achieve greatness!"
Egg humor wrapped in wisdom especially for you.
Creativity Kickin' In
Been playing
and
it feels GOOD!
Have some gorgeous vintage apothecary bottles
that I put up for sale
I am finding it extremely hard to part with them.
I want to keep them.
I have been collecting them.
I love them.
Need for income is beating down desire of posession.
My loss.
Someone else will gain.
So I got creative.
Took pictures and played.
Used a quote from
and backgrounds from
an uber talented and generous blogger
Now I have a wonderful picture of my beloved apothecary bottles!
An Interesting Journey
I was gone from Blogland last week.
Did you miss me?
It was a difficult and trying week.
End result - all is good.
Thank you to my two very special bloggy friends for your support.
You know who you are and I love you!
The Journey
Yesterday we (the family and I) decided to go for a drive.
We were only minutes out of town.
We turned down a road we have traveled before
but took it further than we ever had (which wasn't far).
We saw a road.
We turned again.
The first address we passed held mature landscaping
and what appeared to be a home ripped off its foundation.
A bit further down was another home.
Big and beautiful
and boarded up.
 Next to that, another.
This one with windows and screens broke out
where the boards were on the inside rather than the out.
 At the end of the road
(opposite side)
was the biggest house of all.
When we first pulled up there was a hawk
perched at the tip of the garage.
Each home had a sign posted at the end of the driveway.
NO TRESPASSING
It was a short road along water.
Nothing but the few boarded up homes and empty fields.
A bit spooky actually.
As we left we wanted to know the name of the road.
Someone had stolen the sign.
The road remained nameless to us.
What was the story with these big beautiful homes?
Could it be contamination that drove the owners out?
Could it be the economy?
Failed development?
We decided to head back out.
Just yards down the road we passed a small turn-around and pulled in.
There was a stairway leading down to a lake
where a ghost of a tree lay silent.
Near the path we discovered more death.
We decided "That's enough of that!"
and piled back in the van.
Within yards we came upon another (much older) community.
Some of the houses were run down yet inhabited.
Others appeared abandoned.
 How strange.
The home was left with half the roof torn off
and a tarp remaining to cover.
It had obviously been a while since they decided not to finish the job.
 On closer inspection, it appears as if someone has broken and entered
and forgot to close the door behind themselves.
Or perhaps it was the ghost owners peeking out at us
as we peeked in at them.
The whole experience was so intriguing and strange.
We drove a few more yards and came upon a curve in the road.
At the height of the curve is this mysterious farm
with its mysterious tree trunk fencing
and more NO TRESPASSING signs
assuring us that this was not the place to drop off the kids
for cookie sales!
The whole area was so mysterious and odd and intriguing.
What's the story behind it all?
What a cool low budget film hubby and I could make
heading back at dusk with our camcorder and imaginations!
Too bad we're both chicken shits!
My mind is still running wild with possibilities and stories.
The kid were intrigued as well.
I thought about nosing around to find the history on the area.
Then I thought of how the truth would take all the fun out.
How about you?
Does it get your storytelling juices flowing?
